Thus spake Zarathustra. A book for all and none Così parlò Zarathustra

1. Capitolo 1
When Zarathustra was thirty years old, he left his home and the lake of his home, and went into the mountains. There he enjoyed his spirit and solitude, and for ten years did not weary of it. But at last his heart changed,—and rising one morning with the rosy dawn, he went before the sun, and spake thus unto it:

Thou great star! What would be thy happiness if thou hadst not those for whom thou shinest!

For ten years hast thou climbed hither unto my cave: thou wouldst have wearied of thy light and of the journey, had it not been for me, mine eagle, and my serpent.

But we awaited thee every morning, took from thee thine overflow and blessed thee for it.

Lo! I am weary of my wisdom, like the bee that hath gathered too much honey; I need hands outstretched to take it.

I would fain bestow and distribute, until the wise have once more become joyous in their folly, and the poor happy in their riches.

Therefore must I descend into the deep: as thou doest in the evening, when thou goest behind the sea, and givest light also to the nether-world, thou exuberant star!

Like thee must I GO DOWN, as men say, to whom I shall descend.

Bless me, then, thou tranquil eye, that canst behold even the greatest happiness without envy!

Bless the cup that is about to overflow, that the water may flow golden out of it, and carry everywhere the reflection of thy bliss!

Lo! This cup is again going to empty itself, and Zarathustra is again going to be a man.

Thus began Zarathustra’s down-going.

Quando Zarathustra ebbe trent’anni, abbandonò il suo paese e il lago del suo paese e andò sulla montagna. Qui godette del proprio spirito e della propria solitudine, e per dieci anni non se ne stancò. Ma alla fine il suo cuore si trasformò e un mattino egli si levò all’aurora, si pose di fronte al sole e così gli parlò: «Tu grande astro! Che sarebbe la tua felicità se tu non avessi quelli a cui risplendi!

Per dieci anni salisti quassù alla mia caverna: ti sarebbero venuti a noia la tua luce e questo cammino, senza di me, la mia aquila e il mio serpente.

Ma noi ti aspettavamo ogni mattino, ti toglievamo il superfluo e in cambio ti benedicevamo.

Ecco! Ne ho abbastanza della mia saggezza; come l’ape che ha raccolto troppo miele, ho bisogno di mani che si tendano.

Vorrei profondere e distribuire, finché i saggi tra gli uomini di nuovo si rallegrassero della loro stoltezza e i poveri della loro ricchezza.

Per questo debbo scendere nel profondo: come fai tu la sera quando tramonti dietro il mare e porti luce agli inferi, tu opulento astro.

Al pari di te, io debbo tramontare, come dicono gli uomini, ai quali voglio discendere.

Benedicimi dunque, tu placido occhio che sai guardare senza invidia anche una felicità troppo grande.

Benedici la coppa che vuole traboccare, che l’acqua ne trabocchi dorata e porti dappertutto il riflesso della tua beatitudine.

Guarda! Di nuovo questa coppa vuole vuotarsi, e Zarathustra vuole ridiventare uomo».

— Così incominciò il tramonto di Zarathustra.

hang: To hang something is to keep it above the ground.
thin: If someone or something is thin, they are not fat.
flow: To flow is to move easily and continuously in one direction.
empty: If something is empty, it does not have anything in it.
gather: To gather is to collect several things usually from different places.
reflect: To reflect is when a surface sends back light, heat, sound or an image.
behind: Behind means to be at the back of something.
climb: To climb means to use your hands and feet to go up on something.
journey: A journey is a long trip.
own: To own something means to have it. That thing belongs to you.
gain: If you gain something, you get more of it.
rich: If you are rich, you have a lot of money.
